Birmingham Civil Rights Institute – The website of the Civil Rights Museum includes a virtual tour of the museum as well as teacher resources.

Digital History – Children in History – “Young people were involved in all the crucial episodes of American history: They sailed with Columbus; served as go-betweens for English colonists and Indians; toiled as indentured servants; were kidnapped into slavery; fought in the Revolution and the Civil War; labored in coal mines and factories; and stood at the forefront of the Civil Rights movement. Many young people recorded their experiences in diaries, personal letters, and memoirs.”

The Underground Railroad – You are a slave. “Your body, your time, your very breath belong to a farmer in 1850s Maryland. Six long days a week you tend his fields and make him rich. You have never tasted freedom. You never expect to. And yet . . . your soul lights up when you hear whispers of attempted escape. Freedom means a hard, dangerous trek. Do you try it?”

Black History Past to Present – People all over the United States and the world have posted information on the Internet that relates to Black history and African-American heritage. This Webquest asks several questions and each website listed holds the answer to one of the questions.

Sampling African America – “Sometimes when studying a topic hard, it’s not that the topic is especially difficult or complex; but that you don’t feel personally connected to it. It doesn’t reach you emotionally, you might not care about it, or you might feel it doesn’t touch your life. If you have any of these feelings about the study of Black history, we encourage you to try this Subject Sampler. Instead of learning a lot of facts on the subject, a Sampler gets you personally connected to the topic. We want you to find something about it that interests you. Each of the activities asks you to make a commitment about what you like, believe, or feel. We think that once you care about a subject, it will be easier to learn about it.”

Tuskegee Tragedy – CONTENT WARNING – This webquest covers the topic of the medical experimetation done by Tuskegee University and the Public Health Service on African American men from 1932 to 1972. Because of the nature of the topic, discretion should used in determining if it is appropriate for your children. “Imagine that you’re a poor person living during hard economic times. Your government offers you free medical care. Sounds good. But what if the real reason you’re approached is because you have a disease. But instead of giving you medical care, the doctors are really just watching what happens when this disease goes untreated. Suppose a miracle then happens and a treatment is found for your disease. Instead of giving you the new medicine, the doctors continue the experiment of watching the disease go untreated.”

Lapbooking – A New Idea To Make Learning Fun

I’ve been so excited to dive right in with lapbooking now that I have a kindergartener once again.  I used to use lapbooks for different holidays (President Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc) when my older children were young.   It’s been a few years, but I’ve started again!!!  This week, we put together a lapbook based on my daughters favorite book, “Harry the Dirty Dog” by Gene Zion.  I listed our lesson plans and a link to gather your own template for different learning activities.  I put together this short video of the lapbook we finished, if you need a visual.  Follow this link if you can not view video on this website.

http://w877.photobucket.com/pbwidget.swf?pbwurl=http%3A%2F%2Fw877.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fab337%2Fgvwatne%2F09892648.pbw

Our Lesson Plan:

Language Arts – We had the story read to my daughter by Betty White (http://www.storylineonline.net/harry/fullscreen_xl.html).  This is a fun site where celebrities read stories to kids.  After the video of the oral reading, we sat and re-read the story together.  Pointing at each word and looking at the pictures, we were able to talk about the different words used to describe certain actions:

  • Dashed
  • Soundly
  • Furiously
  • Chute

We practiced writing our words that we learned and used our memories to recall details to the story (How did Harry get so dirty?) We used two different cut out activities and included them in our lapbook.

Social Studies:  We learned the difference between pets and wild animals.  We learned how to take care of them and the needs of people and pets.  We looked through the story at all the different animals and picked out which ones would make good pets and those that would probably not make good pets (why?) We used a cut out for human needs and animal needs for our lapbook.

We also talked about making smart choices.  We used “Harry” as an example for making a bad choice, then a good one (running away and then returning).  We talked about how bad choices have consequences and how important it is to follow rules for safety. We used a cut out to show how Harry got so dirty in our lapbook.

Math:  We counted outloud all the animals shown in the book.  Then, we cut out a bunch of copied “Harry’s” and added them up.  Using a counting book, we pasted the dogs and wrote down the total number.

There are many more activities that you could choose for your own lapbook.  It’s completely up to you as to how you want it to look.  My daughter loves to color with markers, so for Art I had her color with all her favorite colors the inside cover of the lapbook.

Here is another link that you can use to find templates for the cut out activities to include in your lapbooks:  http://lapbooklessons.com/LapbookTemplates.html

Worldwide Snail-mail Penpal Club

Sign-Ups August 8th – 19th
Penpal Registration is now CLOSED ~ Penpal Registration is now CLOSED
All participants will be notified via e-mail with further information regarding their registration and penpal exchange.

Every year about this time, Weblink Education sponsors a snail-mail penpal club worldwide with other homeschool children.  There are families from all over the USA and other countries who participate.  We developed this snail-mail penpal club over 6 years ago and have placed over 800 children together.  The Lord has blessed this club and it is always exciting to start the new session with new homeschool families. We hope you read the description below and decide to participate with us this year.  Weblink Education looks forward to blessing your family with a new friend and a new way to motivate language arts in your family.

Now, due to the abundance of children wanting to participate, I ask that you read through this announcement and follow the directions precisely.  It is in your best interest to do what is asked in the time given to secure a penpal for your child.

Veteran Club Members:  As always, Weblink Education  suggests that if you are currently enrolled in our penpal club with an assigned penpal, please talk with the parent of your child’s penpal and see if the kids are wanting to continue on in the club together. If you have not heard back from your penpal’s parent, please consider being reassigned a new penpal.  I completely understand that sometimes the matches don’t work and/or families realize that keeping up on letters does not fit into their schedules.  Of course, I would not want your child to be limited by someone elses priorities or for a lack of connection.  I will gladly assign a new penpal and/or give a second one to you.

Current penpals that are happy with the way things are, will be under no obligation to contact Weblink Education.   We will not be issuing new penpals to those who do NOT contact Weblink Education personally.

NEW CLUB MEMBERS:  PLEASE DO NOT POST ANY PERSONAL INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE COMMENT SECTION.  All information will be handled directly by me, the moderator, with you.  No personal information such as addresses, age, gender, or last names will ever be posted on the website or facebook. Weblink Education will be using a couple different Christian Homeschool groups for matching penpals across state/country lines. We have been involved with each of these groups for several years and can vouch for their Christian leadership. Each member who participates in this penpal exchange will be required to be a Weblink Education facebook member (if applicable) and provide a working e-mail address of the parent. Just so you do understand, your personal e-mail address will be exchanged with your child’s penpal parent for the easy access of communication between you two.  I feel it is important that the two parents should be able to communicate in times of slow writing and/or difficulty.  This will be required.

Kids ages 5 – 16 will be accepted for the penpal club.  Kids under the age of 5 (kindergarten) will not be apart of the snail-mail penpal club at this time.
ENTRY:IN THE SUBJECT AREA OF YOUR E-MAIL, PLEASE PUT AGE OF CHILD AND STATE ABBREVIATION.

A confirmation e-mail will be sent back to you once the information is received.  Please hold on to that e-mail until you are notified of a penpal match (beginning of September)

Back To School: Equip Yourself

Peace is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process, gradually changing opinions, slowly eroding old barriers, quietly building new structures. ” – John F. Kennedy

In order to have a successful homeschool experience, you need resources to pull from.  In fact, you can say that you need to pack your homeschool “tool belt” with the right tools in order to build something great.  After all,  there are many different family styles that make up the homeschool community.  So, whatever your style, philosophy, and/or system of building your homeschool experience, you need tools to build with.  Therefore, I have dedicated this page to resourceful weblinks  with a brief description of each.  I hope you book mark many of them for use later.  If you also know of a resource weblink that is not listed and might be helpful to other homeschool families, please share it in a comment below or by private e-mail (weblinkeducation@gmail.com)

Back To School: Conquer Your Fears

Some parent/teachers bring last season’s past failures into the new school year…  and I say ‘start anew’!  A great way to ease the fears of a new school year is to make some deliberate changes in your home.  That means starting with a new way of thinking…  try developing a new way of thinking about accomplishing goals and then step out in faith with a new attitude.

Join me as I encourage you to conquer your fears with practical tools that every homeschool family needs.  Today, I will host a 15 minute program via BlogTalkRadio to help families recognize they are not alone in their fears nor are they the only ones who struggle.  I will discuss the tools you’ll need to make life a little easier and help you keep on track with your school year; as well as offer ways to stay connected with others who share the same goals.

For your convenience, you may listen to the recorded version of today’s broadcast by clicking this link: Conquer Your Fears

Word for the Day: When you are struggling and find yourself stressing during the day, take a break.  You wont fall behind or ruin your children’s education – Sometimes taking the day off from studies is all you (everyone) need.  Breathe some fresh air – stretch your legs…  and clear your mind.  Yes, being organized and clutter free will help you handle the daily needs of routine, but at times we simply need a break.  I encourage you to find some personal time to rest and rejuvenate your mind.  I have listed below some great weblinks that offer support in that way via Internet.  Some are Christian devotional weblinks and others are simply support and encouragement.  Thumb through them all and see which ones fit your individual needs.

Homeschool Support Weblinks:

The Christian Housewife – Daily devotions on marriage, family and life experience

Family Education–Select an age group and get parenting advice, child development, and family resources.

MommyLinks - Weblinks to a number of different devotions and websites for mom’s of all ages.
Information On Homeschooling:

All Pro Dad – A dedicated site for dad’s of all children (homeschooled or not). Great ideas of how to strengthen your relationship with one another through “play of the day” e-mail devotions.

iMom – (No Membership Required) Get the support you need through daily e-mails or monthly newsletters. Learn what makes your child tick and how to coach them through life.

MomSense – Family devotions for every day use.

HomeWord – Devotions and articles to help you understand your teenager.
