Back To School: Encouragement

The biggest surprise to a new homeschooling parent is the realization of how short the school day is compared to a traditional brick and mortar building.  Because of the one-on-one teaching you are giving your child, the typical school day hours are cut in half.

Join me as I put to ease the ‘first time jitters‘ most new homeschooling families experience.  Today, I will host a 15 minute program via BlogTalkRadio to help families entering homeschooling for the first time.  I will discuss the tools you’ll need in planning your up coming school year; as well as how to  utilize your new school material efficiently. I’ll also coach you through ways to calculate your school day and give you the best tips to succeed the whole year long.

For your convenience, you may listen to the recorded version of today’s broadcast by clicking this link: Homeschooling With Encouragement

Word For The Day:

The most important advice I can give a new homeschool family is support.  Whether you live in the city or in a rural country house, there IS support available. Of course, the obvious groups consist of libraries and church groups, but now parents are finding it easy using the Internet to connect with others via Facebook, Yahoo, and Google – children can also become each others support through snail-mail penpal clubs, Internet chat classes, and local area play groups.  Please seek out a group to belong to.  Step out and make friends.  Sometimes a little encouragement is all you need to get through those rough days.

Evaluate Before Moving On…

(Taken from my book, “Homeschooling With Encouragement”)

At the end (or beginning) of each school year, use this checklist (or make your own) to evaluate what went well and what you would like to improve for the next year.   Remember, we all have different styles in teaching and this may not apply to some families. However, this is a great way to get an overall view of how you think you did and how your students feel they did. This is best to do at the end of the year while things are fresh in your mind. You might want to discuss these items as a family and/or do a private interview with each member to get a complete picture.

Be sure to include your husband and each child for their individual perspectives. You will need to adapt the questions for each one (e.g., Dad: Do you know what our children learned this year?   What would you have liked them to learn that they did not learn?).  Please do not let this evaluation discourage you!  Rejoice and thank the Lord for what went well and learn from weak areas so that you do even better next year.

——————— Evaluation Checklist ——————–

General (students)

[  ]  What did you like best about our homeschool this year?

[  ]  What did you like least about our homeschool this year?

[  ]  What did you learn?

[  ]  What did you not learn that you would have liked to?

 Academics

[  ]  Were basic foundation skills of reading, language, and math improved, mastered, reviewed and practiced enough?

[  ]  Were specific facts connected to the big picture of overall knowledge through the use of a globe, maps, timelines, charts, and related information?

[  ]  Did we use a variety of teaching methods and materials, (e.g., textbooks, workbooks, unit studies, hands-on activities, library or Internet research, reports)?

[  ]  Were thinking skills taught and encouraged by the types of discussions we had (e.g., comprehension, knowledge, analysis, synthesis, application, and evaluation)?

[_]  Was there enough good supplemental reading done as a family or independently?
[_]  Was there time, resources, and encouragement available to pursue individual interests

Spiritual

[_]  Did your family read God’s Word and pray together daily?

[_]  Was Bible knowledge and Bible study skills increased?

[_]  Were Bible reading and memorization given as much importance as academics?

[_]  Were subjects taught from a Christian worldview?

Character Development (parent/teacher)

[_]  Was character development an important part of our school (e.g., honor and   obedience to mother as the teacher and parent; kindness to siblings; diligence; truthfulness; and attention to details in studies)?

[_]  Was child discipline maintained in a simple, straightforward, and kind manner?

[_]  Were the rules and consequences clear and consistently carried out?

[_]  Were there enough positive motivations and negative consequences?

 Life Skills

[_]  Were life skills included in your training and related to academic subjects (budgeting, cooking, shopping, driving, cleaning, organizing, scheduling, repairing, maintaining a house, yard, and car, voting, supervised Internet use)?

 Logistics (parent/teacher)

[_]  Was the schedule realistic and easy to keep?   Too strict or too lax?   Was doing     schoolwork a regular, daily habit (along with chores and personal grooming)?

[_]  Did we have a good balance between group and independent study?

[_]  Were the classes we did as a group interesting, and did they allow each student to learn?
[_]  Was mother available for help when needed?   Was there a need for alternative activities or procedures when she was unavailable?
[_]  Did we care for our toddlers and babies in the best way for them and for our studies?
[_]  Were the settings for our studies appropriate and conducive to learning (e.g., dining room table, couch, individual desks)?
[_]  Did we have enough, not enough, or too much independent study?  Was there enough time, space, supervision, and help available for these studies?
[_]  What got bogged down that could have gone more quickly?

[_]  Was there enough organization and planning for space, materials, schedule, and chores?

[_]  Were there enough varied experiences or too many outside activities?   Were our supplemental and outside activities worth the time and effort?
[_]  Was the atmosphere of our home warm, loving, and supportive?

 Bottom Line (parent/teacher, student)

[_]  What do you want to do the same or differently next year?

 ****

Save this evaluation and use it for next year and the year after. It will help build your confidence by showing you how far you have come in your homeschooling journey.

Learning Styles and Choosing The Right Curriculum

This is the time of year when families around the world begin shopping for new homeschool curriculum. Unfortunately, many parents become frustrated with choosing the right one for their children. I know from personal experience that this can be an overwhelming time for the parent/teacher. This is why I have studied for the past few years about brain dominant learning behaviors – I wanted to help and give homeschool families a better understanding as to why some material works better than others.  Hopefully, learning about the different learning styles will help family choose the right curriculum for their children.  I have broken up video into four different parts.  Each one is given a title and only runs for 5 minutes at a time.  You are welcome to run through the videos more than once, or better yet… order my book to help deepen what you have learned.   Just click on the link below and view/listen. If you have any trouble, please contact me personally through Weblink Education and I will send you the link directly.

Part 1:  Defining right/left brain dominance and learning glitches (click here)

Part 2: Defining right/left brain dominant learning behaviors and curriculum that fits that style  (click here)

Much more detailed information is covered in my book, “Learning Curve”. I give many more examples of the different curriculum available to fit the different styles of learning; as well as how to teach to the left/right brain child.  Featured in 2011/2012 Rainbow Resource Catalog.  Contact me directly and I’ll let you know how to order my book free from tax/shipping/handling.

I also offer free homeschool counseling.  I would love the opportunity to help you discover what type of learning style your child has.  Then, we can work together and find the right curriculum for you with suggestions on teaching techniques for that particular learning style.  Please feel free to contact me directly at:  weblinkeducation@gmail.com

Donate Your Curriculum

Do you ever end the school year with a stack of school books and wonder what you’re going to do with all of it?  Maybe you make promises that you’ll use it for ‘filler material’ or save it for the next child.  If you are anything like me, I might use a page or two during the summer months, but end up purchasing something different or new for the next school year.  It just never seems to work out the way I plan. In fact, 9 out of 10 times I usually end up leaving the stack of saved school workbooks… untouched.

Well, I forgot all about this awesome ministry to homeschooling families!  How about trying something new with me? Let’s not sell our book on Ebay – let’s try not to put them out at garage sales…  and let’s not just donate them to anyone.  Try looking into The Book Samaritan.  The Book Samaritan is a not-for-profit Christian organization that provides free books and curriculum to homeschoolers with financial constraints.  The Book Samaritan helps take the stress out of buying books and curriculum so homeschoolers can get down to the business of educating their children!

This awesome non-profit company, located in Oklahoma, accepts any used books, workbooks, flash cards, kits, DVDs, CD-ROMS, and school supplies. I’m sure you have some of that wonderful stuff in your school closet.  Don’t you?

Please consider donating your used, or unused, school material to The Book Samaritan – and bless another family in need.

Hitting Those Stumbling Blocks in Homeschooling

Let’s face it… we all struggle at some point. Problems do arise and even the best of us make mistakes. You are not alone. What makes homeschooling families different from the rest is that we hold the power in our hands to make a difference. The fact that we can step back and refocus our attention on the thing(s) that might be happening within our homeschool, gives us the opportunity to grasp the tools we need to strengthen our efforts. Sometimes we might find that our struggles might be as simple as re-managing our priorities; other times it might be an actual academic concern.

Stumbling blocks are a great way to evaluate and discern between the disguise of learning glitches, behavioral issues, or personal lack of interest. Whatever the reason for concern, a homeschooling parents needs to stop and take notice  in order to move on successfully and strong. Finding the help you need during these stressful times can make all the difference. It can be as easy as finding support with other homeschooling families to getting more professional educational counseling. As we all can relate, getting a new perspective on the situation can help a great deal with personal confidence and student academic performance. So, I encourage you; always remember to STOP and TAKE NOTICE of what is going on in your homeschool.

I hope you find this website helpful in your adventures in homeschooling.  Here are a couple of weblinks for support that are affiliated with WeblinkEducation.com:
